Charming Towns

The 33 villages that make up the Aran Valley are sets of stale flavor in the stone, wood and slate are mixed with the beauty of the intense nature of the montane and alpine landscapes. Each and every one of the villages have their own characteristics that are put out especially in its towers and steeples, and discover in the following list in alphabetical order:

  • Is one of the 7 villages which make up the Lairissa Terçon (county) - the area with the oldest and least populated villages of the Valley.

  • From this other village of Lairissa the bucolic itinerary to the Bassa de Arres begins. There is an open air area with magnificent views.

  • This village also makes up part of the Lairissa Terçon (county). The age of its Romanesque church is seen by the deteriorated state of its facade. It has been unable to withstand the challenges of the difficult high mountain climate.

  • Is one of the most notable villages of High Aran due to its two churches, Sant Joan and Santa María, its quaint old town with some of the most stately Renaissance houses of the Valley. Not to mention its active and vibrant bars and restaurants.

  • The first village the highway traverses when leaving from Vielha going towards France. It has a peculiar urban layout whose typical Aranese civil architecture adapts symbolically to the capricious forms of its small streets.

  • One of the villages of Lairissa where visitors will find the beautiful Aranese fortified house, Socasau, which is next to the Romanesque village of Sant Roc with its maximum architectural exponents.

  • The village of Betren borders Vielha with houses and streets that reach the entrance of the old town. The old of Betren is one of the most beautiful of the Valley given its rustic flavour and the stone houses.

  • A lively village of Lower Aran whose shops bring many visitors, principally from the neighboring country, France, as it is just a few kilometers away through the beautiful Portilhon Pass.

  • This village can be discovered up in the mountains from the N-230 highway passing through the Pontaut nucleus. The village is hanging on the mountain hills at the entrance of the beautiful Toran Valley. The wrought iron benches are one of its unique aspects.

  • This small village on the bank of the Garona River and in the direction of Baqueira has a simple and quaint urban area where we can observe some homes from the 17th century with pretty Renassaince windows.

  • In this village, presided over by a Romanesque church with bell tower from the 17th century, the Middle Aran begins. It is located at the point in which the Joeu river joins the Garaona River. The staring point of the river is called the Eyes of the Jew. It is an exceptional geological phenomenon with waters coming down from the Aneto glacier.

  • This village with excellent restaurants has an interesting urban area with windy uphill streets with several noteworthy home. These follow the typical Aranese architecture and some have been converted into Rural Tourism establishments.

  • Garos is the first village of the High Aran which is crossed by the Camino Real (Royal Path) at one of its most interesting points.

  • Located between Casau and Vielha, Gausac has converted into a residential area appreciated for its beautiful views towards the Vielha Pass as well as its tranquility.

  • It is one of the most picturesque villages of the Valley due to its streets and elevated location above the highway the Garona river from which there are wonderful views of the Mont Romies forest.

  • The last village which the N-230 highway crosses before reaching the border of France. At the Puente del Rey there is a subfloor of thermal waters that have healing properties for the skin which are used in the Termas de la Baronia de Les Spa.

  • This small village of the Marcatosa "terçon" or county has a few more than 15 inhabitants stands in a elevated area which offers priviledged views over Vielha, especially if one goes up to the Plan de Mont.

  • Located at 1222 meters in altitude and only 3,5 km from Vielha, Montcorbau has some beautiful views of the Sarraeta mountains and of the Nere Peak. Their snow covered tops contrast with the green landscape of the lush Baricauba forest.

  • This small village near Salardú is one that has best resisted the passing of time and, therefore, is a testament of such is the Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Eulalia.
