Baqueira Beret opens the resort this weekend

The Val d’ Aran ski resort, Baqueira Beret, will open 25 ski slopes next Saturday with more than 30 km of open slopes and a maximum snow thickness of up to 50 cm. The heavy snowfall and intense cold of the last few weeks has led to an abundant production of snow and the ideal conditions to bring forward the opening, initially planned for the last weekend in November.

The central area of Baqueira will be open with all lifts in operation except for the Telecabina and the TDS Pla de Baqueira. The station will keep its opening during the week and, if weather permitting, until 8 April, the scheduled closing day.

The skiers who come up this weekend will be able to open the new Restaurant del Bosque in Baqueira 1800. Orri’s Parrrec, Orri’s ticket offices and Baqueira 1500’s offices will also be open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The Ski Service, located in Baqueira 1.500 and at elevation 1.800, will also be active and it will be possible to hire the services of ski-guards and boots for the whole season in Ruda, Baqueira 1500 and Baqueira 1800.

"Paisatges ena taula", gastronomic exhibition in Arties

An exhibition on the evolution of gastronomy throughout history and how the landscape of our table has changed was inaugurated last Friday in the exhibition hall of the church of Sant Joan d’ Arties. The exhibition can be visited, until 27 January 2018, from Monday to Saturday from 5 to 8 pm.
“Paisatges ena taula” covers the transformation of cuisine and food and the changes brought about by globalisation in the way it is processed, conserved and produced. The exhibition’s museography is composed of interactive and documentary exhibition resources, as well as ethnological objects from everyday life in our kitchens.
The exhibition is the result of the joint work of the museums that form part of the Xarxa de Museus d’ Etnologia de Catalunya. In addition,”Paisatges ena taula” is this year’s last exhibition in the church of Sant Joan and one of the many actions related to gastronomy in the Network of Museums of Val d’ Aran.

Ski season 2017-2018: Promotion tour

Baqueira Beret and Val d’ Aran present the ski season 2017-2018 and the novelties in the snow activities of next winter.

The promotion of the ski season 2017-2018 of Baqueira Beret will begin next October 23rd in Burgos, with a tour of 19 Spanish cities where all the novelties and snow activities of the Val d’ Aran will be presented. In Madrid and Barcelona, special presentations will be held at the Platea and Illa Diagonal shopping centres, respectively.

A tasting of products from the Val d’ Aran Guarantee Brand will accompany the presentation ceremony in each of the towns. There will be announced proposals, surprises and experiences, unique and exclusive for this winter. In addition, visitors will be able to participate in the draw forfaits, full stays, weekends, ski courses and equipment Salomon.

Descubrir el patrimonio aranés en otoño

Autumn is one of the best moments to enjoy the high mountain scenery that coexists with the Aranese heritage. a culture and traditions perpetuated for centuries. Each of the 33 villages in the Aran has its own church, some of which are authentic architectural treasures, with jewels of painting or sculptural ensembles inside, an artistic legacy of great variety and exceptional richness.

The heritage area of the Culture Department of the Conselh Generau d’ Aran offers the possibility of discovering the Romanesque features of the valley, through guided visits to the most significant churches. Built mainly during the 12th and 13th centuries, they are characterised by an evolved Romanesque style, which is still very late, despite the fact that some buildings retain part of the Lombard Romanesque style, with a riuca iconography on their doorstep, notable sculptural ornamentation and bell towers that are immediately identified with the Aranese villages.

The fifteen churches of the Romanesque route of the Aran are interesting, but there are five absolutely essential visits:

Santa Maria de Arties, declared a National Monument. Inside it houses interesting Gothic and Renaissance mural paintings. The altarpiece of the main altarpiece, a masterpiece of Gothic painting, with paintings representing different scenes with the Virgin Mary, is also noteworthy.

Sant Miquèu de Vielha, located in the centre of the capital of Aran, XIII century, is an example of architectural transition from Romanesque to Gothic, although it has later additions such as the dome or the last two chapels. In the 16th century, the impressive bell tower with five archivolts was erected. Inside is a Gothic altarpiece, attributed to the master of Vielha and Crist de Mijaran. The latter was part of a sculptural ensemble made in the Erill la Vall workshop. Esrte Cristo, is one of the most paradigmatic pieces of 12th century Romanesque sculpture.

Sant Andrèu de Salardú. Its architecture is typical of late Romanesque architecture from the 13th century. Inside we are surprised by an elegant Gothic architectural structure and the mural paintings of the seventeenth century, which depict various personalities and biblical examples. In the central apse is the 12th century carving of the Christ of Salardú, a work by Erill la Vall’s workshop.

Era Mair de Diu dera Purificacion. Situated in Bossòst (Baish Aran), this church is a magnificent example of Romanesque Aranese architecture. Its basilical floor plan has three naves built in turn of cannon, supported on circular pillars. A detail that does not go unnoticed is a fragment of mural painting from the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, located in the central apse, where the representation of the scene of the Epiphany is intuited..

Sta. Eulàlia de Unha. Romanesque paintings in the semi-sphere of the central apse show what must have been the Pantocrator, of which the face is preserved. It houses 16th century paintings, in which biblical episodes take place. The two baptismal spades are also very interesting. The bell tower of the Santa Eulàlia bell tower was added in the 18th century.

The autumn's cuisine in the Val d'Aran

At this season we get good fresh new ingredients like mushrooms or beans, which are incorporated in the Aran restaurants menu. Foie gras, duck breast and confit, the typical Olha aranesa, boar civet and the bolhs and pates are just a small example of the cuisine that can be tasted at this time.

During the months of September and October mushroom enters its peak season, an increasingly present product in the recipes of local dishes of the Val d’Aran, accompanying newly introduced products such as sturgeon and caviar, or strengthening the special flavor and texture of game meat in dishes like Wild boar stew.

We cannot forget Era Mongetada, the great gastronomic and cultural festival that is celebrated in the towns of Bossòst and Garòs the All Saints weekend, to worship to one of the main products of the Valley gastronomy.

And as we like parties, another celebration, the Snowfest, will close this period in late November to give way to the snow and to the hibernal season: Baqueira in all its glory … but we’ll tell you this in another post!

“Viles florides” of the Val d' Aran: Bagergue, Canejan and Arties

Bagergue, Canejan and Arties are the three Aranese towns that are members of the “Viles Florides” project, which promotes the Ornamental Horticulture Confederation of Catalonia (CHOC) with the support of the Catalan Tourism Agency. After Bagergue obtained four flowers of honour last season – the highest recognition obtained so far – this year was followed by the other two villages that, once the improvements in their environment have been made this summer, expect to know the decision of the jury on Friday 22, at an event to be held in Mollet del Vallès.
The “viles florides” stand out for their real, conscious and long-lasting action in terms of landscaping, urban landscape and improving the quality of life of its citizens. Its cataloguing is decided by a jury specialized in flowers, gardening, landscaping, urban furniture and other related fields.
The Honor flower -from one to five- is the recognition that certifies them as “viles florides”. Among the most valued aspects are plant and landscape heritage, resources for its maintenance, diversity in the province and the functionality of green spaces, among others. Respect for the environment and sustainability is also taken into account, as well as the social use made of it and synergies with tourism activity.

This year there are already three “viles florides” de la Val d’ Aran: Bagergue, Canejan and Arties. To promote themselves jointly Bagergue and Canejan have joined the Viles florides del Pirineu de Lleida project, and Arties will do so next season, as this year has not arrived on time. Together with other municipalities such as Rialp, Vilaller and La Seu d’ Urgell, they have initiated joint promotional actions such as the publication of a triptych distributed throughout the Pyrenees.
The three Aranese towns have done a good job, both in the public and private areas dependent on the council, for which they have achieved the involvement of most of the neighbours. Each in their own way, they have gradually planted the village with flowers.

Bagergue, vila florida de la Val d’Aran

Bagergue, which joined the “Viles florides” project last season, is one of five Catalan municipalities with four flowers of honour. The villa is filled with flowers that give life and color to the stones of the characteristic houses of Aranese construction.
The highest village of the Val d’ Aran, situated at 1,419 metres above sea level, is characterised by its streets decorated with flowers of all kinds. This year, 20 new planters have been added, and as a future project, the integration of vegetation into the entrance wall of the villa is planned.
Above all, the enthusiasm and involvement of the neighbours in the beautification tasks is outstanding. In addition, this summer a good promotional campaign was carried out with the creation of the “Route of the flowery spaces of Bagergue” and the organisation of a photographic competition in Instagram. The participation of the people in this project has contributed to the increase of the tourist attraction by 22% more than last year and 58% more than two years ago.

In March of this year, Canejan joined the “Viles florides” project. At 906 metres above sea level, it is the Val d’Aran northernmost village. Elevated over the Val de Toran, it offers one of the best views of the whole Baish Aran.
