The Museu dera Nhèu, a unique thematic centre in Europe

Located in the town of Unha, just seven kilometres from the ski resort of Baqueira Beret, the Musèu dera Nhèu of the Val d’Aran joins a documented thematic exhibition on snow with worldwide references that make it a unique space in Europe.

The Musèu dera Nhèu is a harmonious combination of audiovisual and interactive resources and graphics and written historical documents, can address the phenomenon of snow from the scientific perspective, ethnographic and sport, with the help of an extensive collection of testimonials items ranging from a mockup of Baqueira Beret until the first models of skis.

Coto Çò Baile an eighteenth century building, hosts this centre created in 2006, with 500 m2 of permanent exhibition on three floors and four sections on meteorological phenomenon; the harshness of life in these areas; snow sports; and ski resorts. The centre is complemented by another 150 m2 in the building of Social Casal intended for exhibitions and conferences. During the winter there ara guided visits that it is necessary to arrange in the municipality of Naut Aran.

What is snow?

Crystals and snow of the cohesion, avalanches, glaciers or the animals adaptation to the snow are some of the topics covered on the first floor, with a scientific vision and displayed via touch screens and audiovisual media. This section has been made with the cooperation of the Val d’Aran Prediction Center of Avalanches, under the Conselh Generau d’Aran , which participated in developing of the content.

When the snow was suffered

The second thematic section focuses on the lifestyle of some territories conditioned by a certain geography and meteorology. Hardness winters, architecture adapted, clothing, legends and beliefs, popular sayings … With the old fire place of the house as part of the scenery, it is recreated a traditional kitchen with utensils from contributions from individuals and the Museum of Vielha, including old sleds and vintage clothing.

Gold snow

The beginnings of skiing and the different types of sports and snow activities, winter fashion and ski equipment are part of this third section which shows how the Val d’Aran has become a winter tourist destination unique for its conditions, with heavy snow and of very good quality, which has been the cradle of outstanding athletes. It also includes an audiovisual and a permanent exhibition of materials given in part by Baqueira Beret.

Ski resorts

The final section gives an overview of the history and present of the main ski resorts in the world and in Catalonia, with special mention of Baqueira, consolidated as one of the best ski resorts in the Pyrenees in terms of services, facilities and ski area and on which you can see an interesting audio-visual.

The autumn's cuisine in the Val d'Aran

At this season we get good fresh new ingredients like mushrooms or beans, which are incorporated in the Aran restaurants menu. Foie gras, duck breast and confit, the typical Olha aranesa, boar civet and the bolhs and pates are just a small example of the cuisine that can be tasted at this time.

During the months of September and October mushroom enters its peak season, an increasingly present product in the recipes of local dishes of the Val d’Aran, accompanying newly introduced products such as sturgeon and caviar, or strengthening the special flavor and texture of game meat in dishes like Wild boar stew.

We cannot forget Era Mongetada, the great gastronomic and cultural festival that is celebrated in the towns of Bossòst and Garòs the All Saints weekend, to worship to one of the main products of the Valley gastronomy.

And as we like parties, another celebration, the Snowfest, will close this period in late November to give way to the snow and to the hibernal season: Baqueira in all its glory … but we’ll tell you this in another post!

Mountain shelters of the Val d’Aran

Conangles and Era Honería are the two cozy mountain shelters owned by the Consèlh Generau d’Aran.

They are located in areas of great scenic beauty and easily accessible, from which you can carry out beautiful excursions and routes of medium and low difficulty to know the surroundings.

Conangles

Owned by the Consèlh d’Aran, the refuge is located at the foot of the river Noguera Ribagorzana on its left bank. From the refuge two interesting itineraries leave, one of which towards the waterfall and the ‘estanys’ of Besiberri. The other path climbs above the Hospital de Vielha, dividing towards the valley of Molières, in the southwest direction, and towards the Port of Rius, in the north direction.

Location: 1.2 km from the south entry of the Vielha tunnel.
Height: 1.555 m.
Access: N-230 Lleida-Vielha Km. 150, by a track located in the large truck parking.
Capacity: 36

Era Honería

Owned by the Consèlh Generau d’Aran, the refuge is located at the head of the Toran Valley at 1050 m altitude. It belongs to the municipality of Canejan. The nearest town is Sant Joan de Toran at 1200 m distance. Open all year round, it allows the realization of all types of activities: hiking, classic or ice climbing, snowshoe excursions, ferrata routes, nature trips, excursions and crossings, mountain skiing and ridges.

Location: Valle del Torán, Canejan
Height: 1050 m.
Access: N230 to Pontaut. Take direction Canejan, and once arrived at this detour, continue until the deviation of San Joan de Torán. At this point continue 300 m. More along the paved road.
Capacity: 30
Services: Electric light, wifi, locker for material, bathrooms and showers with hot water, living room with fireplace, emergency radio, bar and meals.

High mountain shelters of the Val d'Aran

Exceptional views, all kinds of activities and adapted services

Colomers, Restanca and Saboredo, the high mountain shelters of the Val d’Aran are robust constructions owned by the Consèlh Generau. From there you can access the most inhospitable and beautiful places of the valley, and you can carry out all kind of high mountain activities, from snow in winter to hiking and climbing in summer. All of them have services adapted to the needs of the hikers, so they only have to worry about enjoying this unforgettable experience.

Colomers

Owned by the Consèlh d’Aran, the refuge is located within the peripheral area of the Parc National d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, near the town of Salardú. Both in summer and in winter from there can be practiced various activities: ascents, itineraries on foot, climbing, skiing, snow channels or snowshoes. In addition, Colomers is part of the great route Carros de Foc.

In winter, the road is open to the car park behind the restaurant Eth Cerèr de Montadí. From June 15 to September 15 you are obliged to leave the car in the parking lot of Banhs de Tredòs, 8 km from Salardú. (2 hours walk to the shelter)

Location: On the left side of the Colomers Lake.
Height: 2.135m
Access: From Salardú, asphalt forest trail to the Tredòs Bahns car park (7 km), then continue on foot or by taxi (season) to the junction (approx 1 hour on foot) and 30 minutes to the shelter by footpath.
Capacity: 60 sleeping places, distributed in 5 rooms with bunk beds, mattresses and blankets.
Services: food and drink, WC and shower with cold water, electricity with solar panels, emergency station and mountain guide.

Restanca

Owned by the Consèlh Generau d’Aran, it is part of the municipality of Naut Aran and its nearest town is Arties. The shelter is run by the guard Josep Mohedano and his team, who provide service and information necessary to enjoy the mountain during the winter and summer seasons. From Restanca you can practice climbing, mountain skiing and various walking itineraries of different length.

Location: On the right side of the lake of Restanca. Inside the Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici.
Height: 2010 m.
Access: From the Arties village, take the asphalted forest trail through the Vall de Valarties to the Pont de Ressec parking. Walk for 2 hours to the shelter.
Capacity: 80 seats in bunk beds, with mattress and blankets, distributed in 6 rooms
Services: WC and showers of hot water, food and drink, connection with taxi service, radio connection with mountain rescue group of Pompiers d’Aran.

Saboredo

Owned by the Conselh Generau d’Aran, the Saboredo refuge is located within the peripheral protection zone of the Parc National d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici. An authentic mountain refuge built in stone and surrounded by trees, in a spectacular setting overlooking the Saboredo circus on one side and the Baqueira Beret massif and the Mauberme on the other.

Location: By the lake of Baish in Val de Ruda
Height: 2310m
Access: By the road from Baqueira to the Bonaigua port. Rising from Vielha, a few meters past Baqueira, on the right is a junction with a sign indicating the refuge Saborèdo.
Capacity: 28 beds

The cuisine of mushrooms in the Val d’Aran

During the months of September and October enters its peak season of mushrooms, a product increasingly present in the recipes of Val d’Aran local dishes, the variety of these precious fungi found in the forests of the Valley. Not surprisingly the territory has become the flagship in this recovered hobby and organizes since 10 years ago Mycological workshops with outings, conferences, exhibitions and, of course, culinary tastings.

Experts mycologists show attendees how to collect mushrooms and clean them in the same forest to let the spores that allow their growth next year; how to place them carefully in the basket for perfect preservation; and how to clean them gently with a brush without water to maintain all its flavour.

Also, with the cooks of the best local restaurants, you can learn the different culinary techniques to preserve and develop them according to its variety, from simple blanching to escabeche, confit, dried, frozen and even jam. “The mushroom is a seasonal product and only when we have it fresh we serve it as a main dish grilled or in carpaccio, for example” says Marc Nus, chef of Era Coquela and one of the promoters of the workshops, “conservation techniques allow us to cook with them throughout the year or use them as aromatic spice“.

More than 200 species have been cataloged in the forests of the Val d’Aran, some of them especially tasty as the known rovellons, camagrocs, fredolics, ceps, rossinyols or even the trompetes de la mort. They are included in typical Aranese dishes as the Civet de senglar, the Olha de pagès or the already famous Rostit de bou amb bolets of Casa Perú de Bagergue..

But also the modern Aranese kitchen discovers new possibilities of the mushrooms, accompanying products as sturgeon and caviar, extremely attractive on a bed of camagrocs or a mixture of mushrooms. “Among the star dishes of Era Coquela we have the Parmentier de patata amb trompeta de la mort i orella de garrí comfitada and the Ou a baixa temperatura amb ceps, foie i escuma de patata” said Marc Nus.

In this line there are the Llom de cèrvol amb bolets from Urtau, the Manetes de porc farcides de nous i bolets from Era Lucana or the Pit de pintada rostida amb xalotes, mini pastanagues i bolets from Er Occitan. Alson, the Valley chefs find their applications in the creams, soups and riz dishes as the Rissoto de ceps amb carpaccio de cèrvol from Era Coquela and Arròs amb bolets i llebre from Era Lucana.

Mushrooms Pintxo Pote from Urtau

The Pintxo Pote associations of the Val d’Aran have signed up to the initiative, and there are already many tapas incorporating mushrooms as the main product, support or flavouring. During this week you can taste them in Vielha on Tuesday, on Thursday in Bossòst and on Friday in Les.

Hiking in the Val d'Aran by the lake circus of Colomèrs

Colomèrs, the largest glacial lake circus of the Pyrenees is a mountain range formed in the shape of a circle which holds in its basin nearly 50 lakes (estanhs). The slow, but efficient process of erosion of ice from the glacier era left behind the legacy of an incomparable landscape: a place of high mountains with high and steep peaks of around 3000m, as the Creu de Colomèrs, the Gran Tuc de Colomèrs and Tuc of Ratera . This is one of the most recommended destinations for hiking in the Val d’Aran that can be accessed via two routes of great scenic beauty.

Route from Salardú by the Bank of Aiguamòg

Salardú approach from the Bank of Aiguamòg, peripheral zone of the National Park of Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici, allows us to enjoy landscapes of pastures, meadows, forests, rivers and lofty peaks. In the middle of the valley are the Bahns of Tredòs, ancient baths recovered in 1988 whose sulphurous waters constitute a part of the bather tradition healing waters for Aran, which have always been well hot springs in the mountains of Upper and Lower Aran . Here we park the car and continue the route to the lakes of Colomèrs, on foot or on one of the seven-seater taxis that make the path to where the forest trail arrives.

Route from Arties by the the Bank of Valarties

High mountain valley with the presence of the emblematic Tuc deth Montarto (2833m.) From Arties, leaves the trail that goes along the valley of Valarties river until, about 6 km from the village, a small track on the right that leads to a recreational area located at the foot of a dam. From this point it is mandatory to leave cars and can only continue with SUVs and always with the prohibition of parking on the rest of the track.

Curiosities of the environment

Rocks in this area are large blocks of granite placed in isolated places that were carried by the glacier.

As plants native to the area include gentian (gentian acaulis), blue violet, which extends its roots underground and from one plant out very scattered flowers; and monkshood (Aconitum napelus), one of the most toxic known, deadly even in small doses. It was used as a soothing poultice for gout and rheumatism.

Holidays in the Val d'Aran, an unforgettable summer in the mountain

Have you planned your holiday in the Val d’Aran? Besides enjoying an exceptional landscape and a very pleasant temperature, we offer a variety of activities for all tastes, from cultural visits to the most extreme sport. These are our suggestions!

1.Soaking in public pools

We recommend trying the novelty of this year, the new thermal pools of public use of Arties, where you can enjoy the natural water at 39 °C. And you also have municipal pools in Salardu, Vielha, Gausac, Bossòst and Les, all equipped with changing rooms, sun beds, bar service and surrounded by a spectacular scenery.

2.Mountable the chairlift Blanhiblar

From 23 July to 28 August will be working in the ski resort of Baqueira Beret the Blanhiblar chairlift, departing at 1850 m and arrival to 2245m, from where you can see the best views of the valley. From above we propose you four routes on foot and one by bicycle.

3.Know the industrial heritage of the Valley

In Victoria mines you have a guided walking tour of three kilometres lasting 2-3 hours. This former zinc mine in the area of Arres and Bossost is part of the industrial past of the Val d’Aran.

We also recommend the Mola de Salardú a restored mill where you have the opportunity to see the functioning of the hydraulic mechanism and learn about the process of making flour.

4.Get in the little train to Artiga de Lin

This initiative is part of the pilot plan launched by the Conselh Generau d’Aran to regularize the motorized access in the Ribera del Joèu. Unauthorized vehicles must park just before the shrine of the Virgen de la Artiga Lin where there is an information booth that will offer recommendations, contact guides and routes and from where our visitors can take the train with permanent service that will take them to visit one of the most beautiful places of the Val d’Aran.

5.Delight in Romanic concerts musicau

A full program of free concerts that take place every Friday from July 29 to September 2 in the most emblematic Romanesque churches Aran. A feast for the senses where the acoustics of the building is the accompaniment of the selected musical pieces. Download the program in this link.

6. Have fun in the village’s festivals

7. Know the history of the Valley through our museums

The summer season in the Aranese museums has come up with an attractive cultural and leisure proposal which includes various exhibitions, workshops and guided tours, and new schedules that will remain until 11 September. It has also been expanded the Rota Romanica d’Aran, which allows to discover the rich artistic heritage of the Val d’Aran, with the addition of Escunhau, Betren and Bagergue churches. 8. Mountain hiking

After the success of last year in his first season, comes back the Tour del Aneto, a hiking 6-stage circular path around the giant of the Pyrenees across 5 valleys and organized by the company Camins. In addition, Saboredo, Colomers and Restanca -high mountain refuges located in the Parc National d’Aigüestortes- and Conangles and Era Honeria -the mountain refugees of the Val d’Aran-, are enabled for the new hiking season.

9. Go across the Val d’Aran by bike

The circuit of the Val d’Aran cycling routes is very broad and you will find at all levels and distances. In the microsite Aran Total Bike you’ll have all of them with technical data -distance, altitude, approximate time of completion and tracks GPX-, itinerary and the elements of interest and native vegetation.

10. Discover the environment of the valley through responsible ecotourism

In order to publicize the interesting diversity of natural species of the Val d’Aran and the surprising habitat that surrounds them, the responsible ecotourism initiative, “Hidden Nature” brings together an interesting range of activities and outputs guided through territory. In addition to disclosing the beauty of the natural environment of the valley, the program affects the sustainability of the destination as a guarantee of added value for the visitor.

Summer 2016: Mountain races in the Val d'Aran

The mountain racing season in the Val d’Aran begins in mid-June with the Carlac Trail and ends in early October with the Vertical d’Aran. During these months, we propose twenty circuits adapted to all capacities, through beautiful roads, mountainous terrain, rugged forests and aerial tours with spectacular views across the valley.

An offer of all kind of ascents and descents, with different slopes and distances from 2 to 104 km, and different forms, from night circuits to authentic mountain marathons. They are races that will take you to discover the most emblematic peaks of the Valley as the Montcorbison or Pui d’Unha, beautiful landscapes and forest like the Carlac, the most amazing trails and recovered old roads passing picturesque villages of the Val d’Aran as Aubèrt, Vilamòs or Es Bordes.. MTB in the Val d’Aran

A new bike season is launched in the Val d’Aran, with the preparations for new competitions for any age or level, individual and team. In an environment of exceptional beauty, the Valley cyclist entities year after year are dumped in the organization of these events, some of which have become a must for fans of mountain biking.

In addition, this year the Aranese cycling is especially excited by the reception of the 9th stage of the Tour de France on July 10, starting in Vielha and with arrival to Andorra. With 140km and a positive difference of 5200m, this test is between one of the toughest in the Pyrenees and flows entirely by the Val d’Aran, a perfect place to enjoy the most authentic mountain stage.

A circular loop starting and finishing in Gessa, which runs around Naut Aran and station Baqueira Beret ski resort with spectacular views. Large and promotions beautiful trails down, some of them will need technical but never get off the bike.

Short circuit

Circular circuit that avoids the technical difficulties of ultra tour. The tour is suitable for any lover MTB cyclist. The primary requirement is the ascent from the “Val de Ruda” to the core of Baqueira Beret 1800.

Circuit guided by adults who runs the villages of Gessa, Unha, Tredos and Salardu. The circuit is designed for children under 13 who wish to spend a good morning on his mountain bike.
